The Meta-Motivation Inventory
Perhaps
one of the most fascinating adventures that people share is the process of
self-discovery. It is the knowledge of self, derived from increasing
self-awareness in this exciting life process of learning and growth that
provides the means of developing and exercising our full potential.
The Meta-Motivation Inventory was
designed to assist in assessing your progress in this process of growth,
providing feedback on your characteristic personal, management and leadership
styles. The Inventory can be
administered and debriefed during a seminar providing participants with valid
and reliable feedback on thirty-two personality dimensions contained in the
following six major categories.
"Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." - Helen Keller Achievement Motivation: People who share this style believe they control their own destiny and establish their own agenda in the pursuit of excellence. They are self-assertive, get bored with routine, like adventure and creative problem-solving. As effective managers, they are results oriented and establish challenging, stretch goals for themselves and encourage their subordinates to do the same. This style is best counterbalanced by a concern for people. “There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward.” – Kahlil Gibran Concern For People: People who manifest this style are helpful, supportive and get a great deal of satisfaction in assisting in the growth and development of others. As the manager develops humanistic and synergistic skills, management effectiveness increases dramatically. By creating an open, diverse and inclusive environment, productivity increases and the individual achieves the qualities most often attributed to excellent managers. "Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they're yours." - Richard Bach Deterministic: People who share this style are focused on pleasing others and are perceived as nice, warm, charming, people. They are usually cautious, conservative, and prefer the status quo to rapid changes in their lives. In management this person is viewed as a nice boss who readily delegates responsibility and authority to others. They are equally responsive to their supervisors and subordinate's needs and often try to please everyone in the work environment, which can lead to indecisiveness. "Absolute power is the perversion of human strength." - Anonymous Need For Control: This style is characteristic of individuals who feel a need for control in their lives. They generally enjoy having influence over other people and can be somewhat judgmental, dogmatic, and rigid. As a boss this person tends to rely upon the authority of their position. A modest manifestation of this style results in an effective authoritative management style, being exceptionally persuasive in leading their subordinates to accomplish tasks. "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer." Henry David Thoreau Self-Actualization: Self-actualizing people have a unique perspective on life. They tend to be non-defensive, enjoy a secure sense of self-esteem and manifest a relaxed self-confidence. They are spontaneous, alive, and active. Although they live by their own rules, creatively and independently, and thus are quite unconventional, they are guided by a strong sense of integrity, truth, justice, and respect for human dignity. They just like to do things their own way and let others choose their own paths. Stress: Perhaps the most
significant factor related to stress is the continual dissonance people suffer
from the assumptions they hold about self, others, and life. If these
expectations of self, others, and life are inconsistent with the reality they
experience, then dissonance becomes reinforced daily and may become cumulative.
This is the primary factor that this inventory measures and has been found to be
very significantly related to illness.
The
Meta-Motivation Book
A comprehensive discussion
of all of the dimensions, and six others, not profiled here, is contained in the
Meta-Motivation Book which accompanies the inventory. The
book is not only intended to provide a foundation for a better understanding of
of your personal, management and leadership mindset, but human behavior. You may find many of the people you know in the pages of this
book. If you are in a leadership position as an executive, manager, supervisor,
parent, or teacher, to name but few, the better you understand yourself and
other people, the more effective you become as a leader. In many cases the
information you derive from this inventory may simply serve to clarify or
confirm what you already know, but this too can be helpful
in the fun and fascinating process of life.
